A 4 year old should be able to dress themselves, use utensils independently and even engage in imaginative play.
4 year olds should also be able to express themselves through language and use longer sentences and understand basic concepts such as time and numbers.
Other things a 4 year old should be able to do are climb stairs alternating feet, count, pedal tricycle, sing songs, understand time, draw, learn to use the toilet, draw, play, say names and addresses, recall part of a story, socialize with other children, use scissors, use fork and spoon, brush teeth, copy square shapes, correctly name familiar colors, hop, skip and jump forward, catch a ball or do a somersault and balance on one foot and can even dress themselves completely without help.
By age 5 a 5 year old should be able to dress themselves and even bathe themselves independently.
Most children by age 5 should be able to get themselves dressed independently, especially with some assistance.
Most 5 year olds have developed the required cognitive and motor skills to be able to manage putting on most clothing items, including pants, sweaters and t shirts without any assistance.
5 year olds should also be able to take off their clothes including socks and put them on although some 5 year olds may need some help with tying of shoes.
5 year olds should also be able to put on their own shoes, put dishes away, make simple foods such as sandwiches, cereals and snacks and can help with taking trash out, picking up toys and making their own bed although they may also need some help.
By age 3 most children can also take off their own coat and remove loose elastic waist pants.
By age 4 most children can undress themselves, including removing tops and pants although they may need some help with zippers or buttons.
And by age 5 most children are able to dress themselves without assistance including putting on the pants, shirts and sweaters and they should also be able to pull up zippers once they are started and fasten large buttons.
However kids develop at their own pace and some kids may take longer or shorter times to learn how to do certain things.
By age 7 a child should be able to do lots of things independently such as showering or bathing, getting dressed and even preparing simple meals.
A 7 year old should also be able to independently use the toilet, flush the toilet, put on shoes, tie shoes, make their bed, put clothes away, help with cleanup and even read a menu at a restaurant or order their own food.
7 year olds should be able to get themselves dressed, tie their shoes, bathe and shower without needing supervision, brush their teeth, wash their hands, prepare simple meals such as sandwiches, snacks, cereal, pack their own lunch, put away their clothes. help with simple cleanup like putting away dishes and picking up toys, help with chores like setting the table or washing dishes.
A 7 year old should also be able to write short sentences and paragraphs, read and understand simple text, attend some extracurricular activities independently and navigate a school environment, including finding their classroom and locker.
Other things that a 7 year old should be able to do independently are understand how to tell time and identify the days of the week, express emotions and describe what has happened, start learning about fractions and money concepts and learn and practice basic math skills such as addition, subtraction and counting.
The 7 year old should also be able to go for short walks with a friend or dog, ride a bicycle independently and pay cashiers when shopping with permission and read a children's menu and order their own food.
Some 7 year olds may also be able to do laundry as well.
My 7 year old son does his own laundry and loves to operate the washing machine so I let him and he does a good job.
