You can relax your eye accommodation by palming your eyes, doing eye exercises such as focusing on objects at varying distances or even doing the 20 20 20 rule.

To do the 20 20 20 rule to relax your eye accommodation, after every 20 minutes of any close up work such as using a computer or reading, look at something that is 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.

Doing this can give your eye muscles a chance to relax and refocus and reduce eye strain.

To palm your eyes, rub your hands together briskly to create warmth, and then place your palms gently over your closed eyes with your fingertips up.

Palming your eyes works to relax your eye accommodation as a result of the warmth and gently pressure relaxing your eye muscles and improving circulation.

Some eye exercises you can do to relax your eye accommodation are the four direction exercise and eye socket massage.

To do the four direction exercise, move your eyes, without moving your head and look as far as you can in all four directions which include up, down, left and right for a few seconds each and repeat this 3 times.

To do the eye socket massage, gently massage the area below your eyebrows in a circular motion, and start from the top of the nose to the edge of the eyelid.

An accommodation spasm also known as an accommodative spasm is diagnosed through a comprehensive eye exam.

A comprehensive eye exam for the diagnoses of accommodation spasm includes cycloplegic refraction using eye drops to relax your ciliary muscle, tests of accommodative function and refraction tests.

During the diagnoses of accommodation spasm the eye doctor will assess your vision at both near and far distances, both with and without glasses and determine your eye's refractive error, "myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism" and also how well your eyes focus at various distances.

The eye doctor will also check for any difficulties or limitations in eye movement and evaluate for any eye misalignment and assess the ability of your eyes to focus on a near object.

The eye doctor will also measure your eye's ability to change it's focus from near to far and evaluate the speed and flexibility of your eye's focusing system and rule out any other potential causes of vision problems.

An accommodation Spasm also known as an accommodative spasm is a temporary condition in which your eye's focusing muscles called the ciliary muscles remain in a state of constant contraction.

As a result of the ciliary muscles remaining in a constant state of contraction it leads to blurred vision and other symptoms such as headaches, eye strain, double vision in some cases and difficulty focusing between near and far objects.

The causes of accommodation spasm or accommodative spasm include certain medications such as cycloplegics, refractive errors such as astigmatism, hyperopia and myopia, eye strain, stress or anxiety and prolonged near work such as reading and computer use.

Treatment for accommodation spasm include rest from doing near work and using computers and other screens, during eye exercises to relax your ciliary muscles, wearing appropriate glasses or contact lenses to correct any refractive errors and in some cases eye drops such as cycloplegics will be used to temporarily paralyze the ciliary muscles and relieve spasms.

To prevent accommodation spasms you should take frequent breaks from near work and using computer screens, use proper and good lighting for near tasks, and adjust your computer screen for brightness and use good eye hygiene and see an eye doctor for regular eye exams.

Accommodation spasms are often temporary in most cases which resolve with rest and appropriate treatment although it it does persist or gets worse it might indicate that you have an underlying medication condition which requires further attention.
