Pseudomyopia is diagnosed using a cycloplegic refraction test which uses eye drops to relax your ciliary muscles which help to determine if any nearsightedness persists.

A cycloplegic refraction test involves the use of eye drops which dilate your pupils and relax your ciliary muscles, which are responsible for focusing of the eye.

Once the ciliary muscle is relaxed, if the nearsightedness disappears or is significantly reduced, it then suggests that the initial nearsightedness was a result of a spasm of your ciliary muscles instead of true myopia.

other diagnostic signs of pseudomyopa are a significant difference between the cycloplegic and non cycloplegic refraction which is also known as the gap refraction and is a key indicator of pseudomyopia.

Other tests for pseudomyopia include a detailed orthoptic evaluation that should be performed in all cases of an accommodative spasm before assuming it is idiopathic.

And a history for psychological triggers or stressors is also important to consider when investigating a possible neurotic hysterical disposition.

Pseudomyopia is also known as false myopia and is a temporary condition where the eyes appear to be nearsighted or myopic but they actually have normal vision.

Pseudomyopia is caused by a spasm of your ciliary muscle which focuses your eye on near objects.

The spasm of the ciliary muscle can be triggered by prolonged near work like using screens, writing or reading, eye strain, stress and certain medication.

People that have pseudomyopia may have blurred vision at a distance, eye strain, headaches and double vision in some cases.
