After liquid nitrogen it can hurt for 1 hour to 2 hours.
Immediately after the liquid nitrogen you can experience pain and swelling which can last for 1 to 2 hours.
If you have cryotherapy for an external skin condition, then the treated area that was treated with liquid nitrogen can turn red and possibly even blister after treatment.
Any mild pain after the cryotherapy or liquid nitrogen should go away fully within about 3 days.
And the treated area will also form a scab that will often heal in 1 week to 3 weeks.
The cryotherapy or cryosurgery which uses liquid nitrogen involves the application of the liquid nitrogen which is a very cold substance that causes a reaction that is similar to frostbite.
The treated site will darken, brown, brown red or even blue within 24 to 48 hours which is normal.
To soothe a liquid nitrogen burn you can gently cleanse the area with mild soap and water daily.
And if the area where the liquid nitrogen burn occurred is extremely uncomfortable you can also take some over the counter pain reliever like Tylenol or Ibuprofen and protect the area from exposure to sunlight while it heals to prevent scar formation.
