The 3 finger test for mastoid tenderness is a test that involves palpating the mastoid process, cymba conchae and the mastoid tip using your index finger, middle finger and your thumb.
The finger test for mastoid tenderness is done to assess pain or tenderness that could indicate mastoiditis or other ear problems.
To perform the 3 finger test for mastoid tenderness place your index finger over your mastoid process which is the bony prominence behind your ear.
Then place your middle finger over the cymba conchae which is the well of the concha, or the other part of the ear.
And then place your thumb over the mastoid tip which is the tip of the mastoid process.
And gently apply pressure to each of these areas to assess for pain or tenderness.
During the 3 finger test for mastoid tenderness you should look for tenderness and pain or discomfort and mastoiditis.
Pain or discomfort in any of the areas that are tested for mastoid tenderness during palpation can indicate inflammation or infection and could suggest mastoiditis or other ear problems.
Mastoiditis is inflammation of the mastoid bone which is often caused by middle ear infection and can cause pain and tenderness behind the ear.
Tenderness in any of these areas can also be associated with other ear conditions, like external otitis "inflammation of the outer ear" or mastoid emissary vein thrombophlebitis.
Addition symptoms and signs of mastoiditis include.
Redness and swelling behind your ear.
Ear pain that may be throbbing or persistent.
Fever, discharge from the ear, hearing loss and the ear being pushed out sideways or down.
If you do suspect mastoiditis or other ear problems you should seek medical attention for proper treatment and diagnoses.
