Swamp Cabbage is illegal because the cabbage palm which Swamp Cabbage comes from is a protected tree in the state of Florida and is one of Florida's state trees.

However it's not illegal to harvest swamp cabbage from trees on your own property.

Swamp Cabbage is only illegal if it's cut down on public lands but if you grow and cut the Swamp Cabbage from your own land it's not illegal to eat or cook Swamp Cabbage.
