To get a prescription for knee braces you will need to see your doctor.

The doctor will then determine if you need a knee brace and determine if the knee brace is medically necessary and if so then the doctor will write you a prescription for the knee brace.

Sometimes you can get the knee brace directly from your clinic and go home with it the same day.

It is OK to wear a knee brace or leg brace all day but it's a good idea to remove the leg brace or knee brace for at least 1 hour during the day.

You should wear a leg brace for at least 8 hours a day and then take the leg brace off before bed and then put the leg brace back on in the morning.

You can also wear the leg brace for 12 hours a day if you prefer but wearing the leg brace for 8 hours a day is generally good enough.

Leg braces do help you walk and also help reduce pain and help improve your legs function.

Leg braces do work when worn properly and when worn long enough although they are not a cure for the leg conditions but they can and do help to ease pain and other symptoms with the leg conditions.

Conditions that require leg braces are strains, sprains, bursitis, arthritis, tendinitis, shin splints, bowed legs and knock knees and sometimes arthritis in the knees or legs.

You should not wear a leg brace to bed and instead it's best to take the leg brace off before bed and then put the leg brace back on when you wake up and get out of bed.

Leg braces are used for helping to stabilizing parts of the legs which have pain or discomfort.

The purpose of the leg brace is to help you find relief from the leg pain and heal from several different musculoskeletal issues.

Conditions that would require a leg brace include.

Strains.
Sprains.

Arthritis.
Tendinitis.
Shin splints.
Bowed legs.
Knock knees.

If your orthopedist recommends it, you can wear your brace all day.

Although, improper use of a knee brace can worsen your pain or cause further damage to the knee.

Most often it takes about a week until you can wear your brace full-time or up to the length of a normal school day.

Wear your brace up for two hours on followed by one hour off for a total wearing time of 6 hours per

Increase wear to a total of 8 hours per day.

In general, you should not wear your brace to bed.

You can put them on just before getting out of bed and take them off once you have gone to bed.

While you are in bed, you will not need the support offered by your hinged knee brace.

A leg brace should fit snugly so it doesn't slide down, but not so snug it pinches your skin.

You should generally wear a knee brace directly against your skin, as wearing on the outside of pants can push the brace down the leg, causing it to be in the wrong position.

To wear a leg brace comfortably.

Choose Your Brace Carefully.
Start with Clean, Dry Skin Without Lotion.
Wear Cotton Fabric Between Your Skin and the Brace.
Wear Loose Clothing Over the Brace.
Judge Tightness with the Two-Finger Fitting Method.
Take Off the Brace for Air Twice a Day.

While braces don't keep knee arthritis from worsening, they can help reduce osteoarthritis knee pain.

“You may find that braces are very comfortable for you, “or you may find that they don't help a whole lot.”
