It is cruel to keep a dog in one room all day as most dogs require space to roam and need social interaction.
However some dogs may need to be kept in one room all day or in a crate such as at night or when away.
But leaving the dog confined to one room all day is not the best thing to do.
The best dog if you work all day is a Chihuahua or a French Bulldog, Basset Hound or Greyhound.
These dogs are pretty independent and low maintenance in nature and makes them suitable for people that need to leave the dogs alone for longer periods.
Your dog will miss you no matter how long you leave him or her and even if you leave him for a week or longer but your dog will also be happy when you return.
I've left my dog for a week and even a month before and when I returned he was very happy to see me although he seemed sad when I first left.
Your dog will not think you abandoned him when you go on vacation.
However if it's your first time leaving your dog with someone else when you go away for awhile on vacation they may experience anxiety or sadness as a result of you not being there.
But when you return and they learn that you will return for them each time they tend to become less anxious and sad in your absence and will be happy to see you when you return to them.
Dogs don't grasp time like humans do as they can't comprehend the duration of you being away although they may notice when you're gone.
The dog breeds that do not tend to have as much separation anxiety are the French Bulldog, Boston Terrier, Basset Hound, Chihuahua, Bullmastiff, Chow Chow and the Basenji.
The dogs with the least separation anxiety are the Greyhound, Lhasa Apso, Shar Pei, Poodle, Shiba Inu, Maltese, Akita, Scottish Terrier, Pug, Miniature Schnauzer and the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.
The dog breeds with the most separation anxiety tend to be the Toy Poodles, Vizlas, Bichon Frises, Jack Russel Terriers, Australian Shpherds, Border Collies, German Shepherds and Labrador Retrievers.
Some dog breeds to better left alone than others.
So if you want a dog and need to leave it alone or leave it with someone else for awhile then you should consider a dog breed that has the least separation anxiety.
While any dog breed can experience separation anxiety, some breeds of dogs are more likely to experience separation anxiety than others due to their genetic makeup and the working history.
And often those dogs bred for close companionship with humans are likely to experience separation anxiety more than others.
Even with a breed of dog, individual dogs can vary in their separation anxiety levels based on their socialization and upbringing.
So even if the dog breed is one that does not tend to get separation anxiety they could have it.
Signs of separation anxiety in dogs are attempts to escape, whining, pacing, excessive barking and destructive behavior and attempting to follow the owner when leaving.
