When your skin itches suddenly including at night it can be a result of dry skin or other conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, thyroid issues or certain medications you're taking.

Certain medications such as antibiotics, diuretics and opioids can cause your skin to itch at night and any other time.

The most common cause of itchy skin at night is dry skin because during sleep your skin naturally loses moisture which leads to skin dryness and itchiness.

Changes in body temperature, hormonal fluctuations, stress and even allergens such as dust mites in your bedding could cause itchy skin at night.

Your body's natural sleep wake cycle can also trigger changes in your blood flow and inflammation levels and potentially cause itching of your skin at night.

Having dust mites in your bedding that you cannot see or pet dander and pollen can also cause allergic reactions and lead to skin itching at night.

Hormonal changes such as during menopause, pregnancy and fluctuations in the hormones can lead to dry skin and itching.

To avoid itchy skin at night apply a fragrance free moisturizer to your skin through the day and before you go to bed.

Take lukewarm baths or lukewarm showers which helps to avoid stripping away your body's natural oils.

And regularly wash your sheets and pillowcases in hot water to reduce allergens.

And use cotton or linen bedding to allow for better air circulation.

Using a humidifier in your room can also add moisture to the air and help keep your skin moisturized as well.

other things that can cause itchy skin at night are vitamin D, iron and zinc deficiencies.

Low levels of vitamin D are linked to eczema and other skin conditions and people with eczema and similar skin conditions tend to have lower vitamin D levels.
