The Somogyi effect is when a low blood sugar episode overnight leads to a high blood sugar episode in the morning as a result of a surge in your hormones.

The Somogyi effect and also the dawn phenomenon are both conditions which can cause you to have high blood sugar in the morning although they occur for different reasons.

The causes of the somogyi effect include excess or ill timed insulin, missed meals or snacks and even inadvertent insulin administration.

Even unrecognized posthypoglycemic hyperglycemia can lead to declining metabolic control and even hypoglycemic complications.

Experiencing hyperglycemia due to the Somogyi effect can sometimes persist for as long as 3 days after a single hypoglycemic episode.

And as a result, your blood glucose concentrations do not always normalize within a few days after lowering the insulin dose.

Blood sugar levels can drop at any time of the day and including during the night when you're sleeping and is a condition called hypoglycemia or low blood sugar.

Blood sugar levels drop below 70 mg/dL when sleeping which is known as nocturnal hypoglycemia.

Blood sugar levels also drop after a period of not eating like overnight and is also known as fasting blood sugar.

The symptoms of low blood sugar or hypoglycemia include headaches, disrupted sleep patterns and interference with your mood, ability to work and quality of life.

Going too long without eating and a rare tumor in your pancreas called an insulinoma are causes of low blood sugar.
