Water itself that is in pure form does not have a smell, color or taste.

Although water that is not pure can have an odor that can be unpleasant as a result of chlorine, algae blooms or even hydrogen sulfide gas.

Hydrogen sulfide gas can occur in water in water wells and even in water heaters that can cause sulfur bacteria to thrive and grow and convert it into hydrogen sulfide gas which can cause the water to smell like rotten eggs.

Water that smells like rotten eggs is not unsafe to drink even when it comes from a water well as long as your well water contains no other bad bacteria.

Algae blooms in raw water can also cause the water to have a wet dog smell, geranium like smell or musty smell.

The smell from algae blooms in water is often harmless and short lived.

Water that contains chlorine such as pool water or city water can smell like bleach and chlorine and can irritate some peoples stomachs.

While chlorinated city water is considered safe it can cause health issues in the long term and could lead to bladder cancer, heart conditions, kidney disease and even colon cancer.

It's best to filter out the chlorine before drinking the water.

For smelly water you can also add some slices of lemon or vitamin C to the water and even filter the water.

If the smell is strong or makes the water unpalatable you should contact the city or water company if you get water from the city.

Water that smells bad doesn't always pose any health risks but in some cases it can mean the water may contain bacteria and should be tested.
