Most scrap yards will take old refrigerators as long as the refrigerant has been drained and removed and the compressor has been removed.
However I've found that a few different scrap yards around me don't take refrigerators while others do so it can depend on the scrap yard on whether they'll buy your scrap refrigerator or not.
So call the scrap yard to be sure if they take refrigerators. Although be aware that just one refrigerator won't pay that much in scrap so you'd need some more metal to take in to make your trip worthwhile unless you're just wanting to haul the refrigerator off to be recycled.
It's better than taking it to the landfill but I wait until I have enough metal to make the trip to the scrap yard worthwhile.
