Urates in babies are crystals that develop in babies urine and is concentrated until they start taking in more fluids.

It's normal to see the crystals also known as urates in babies diapers as an orange, pinkish or chalky color and it's more common in boys.;

Urate crystals also can be seen in older babies and children.

This can also sometimes indicate some level of dehydration, which can result from occurrences such as fever, a reduced number of feedings or volume of human milk or formula, or a shift to warmer weather.

The urate issue typically resolves when fluids are increased.

During the first couple of days, you may notice orange spots (urate crystals) in your baby's diaper.

These crystals are normal and not dangerous.

But if they are still present two days after birth, it may be a sign that your baby is not drinking enough.

Urate is the end-product of the purine metabolism in humans.

The dominant source of urate is endogenous purines and the remainder comes through diet.

Approximately two thirds of urate is eliminated via the kidney with the rest excreted in the feces.

High uric acid is also linked to uric acid kidney stones and chronic kidney disease.

In some studies, it's associated with high blood pressure and heart failure as well as metabolic syndrome — a group of symptoms that increase your chances of diabetes, stroke and heart disease.

Your uric acid levels may be high if you eat foods high in purines.

These include organ meats, dried beans and peas, and fish, such as anchovies, herring, sardines, and mackerel.

High levels can also be caused by a low-salt diet.
