The reason for switchback roads is to allow easier climb and descent of steep hills and instead of having to climb straight up a road or go straight down a steep road you use the switch back road to easily get up and down a steep hill.

A switchback road is a road that goes up and down steep slopes and around sharp bends in a road instead of going straight down and up.

A switchback road is also referred to as a hairpin turn which is a bend in a road with a very acute inner angle which makes it necessary for oncoming vehicles to turn about 180 degrees in order to continue on the road.

Switchback roads work by way of exchanging single paths of steep grades for several paths of a lesser grade and rather than having to climb directly up a slope the switchback roads wind from one side of the slope's face to the other and then back again.

The road that has the most switchbacks is the Hana Highway in Hawaii.
