The crocodile came first and then the alligator as Crocodiles have been found to slightly older as a species than Alligators.

The animals which become crocodiles can be traced as far back to the Jurassic period and the aquatic crocodiles lived over 200 million years ago and are known as Thalattosuchia.

The first land Crocodile is considered to be Sarosuchus.

A crocodile cannot breed with an alligator because despite having a similar appearance the crocodile and alligator are genetically too different and although they are related they long ago diverged into different genera.

Also Alligators and Crocodiles belong to different subspecies (Alligatoridae and Crocodylidae).

The genetic differences between Alligators and Crocodiles make it impossible for them to have progeny.

A crocodile has a bite force of 3,700 psi which is enough of a bite force to actually bite through steel.

Crocodiles have a very powerful bite force up up to 3,700 psi which is enough to bite through steel.

Although if a Crocodile got into a fight with a hippo the hippo would likely win the fight because the hippo is much bigger than the crocodile even though the crocodile has a much more powerful bite force.

A hippos bite force is 1,800 psi which is pretty powerful.

The animal that has the strongest bite is the hippopotamus or hippo.

If a hippo and crocodile got into a fight the hippo would win the fight because the hippo is much bigger and more powerful than the crocodile.

Hippos have a very powerful bite at 1,800PSI.

Their teeth are long and sharp, measuring up to 1.5ft.

Crocodiles have the most powerful bite measured of any terrestrial creature, smashing down on enemies at 3,700PSI with 4-inch teeth.

Crocodiles win in terms of bite power, but their teeth just don't measure up.

Crocs or crocodiles to eat sharks when they can overpower the shark and eat them.

A crocodile will eat just about anything they can including humans.

Crocodiles are not bulletproof.

However Crocodiles have skin that is thick and hard for a bullet to penetrate which makes it hard to shoot and kill a Crocodile.

However with a powerful enough gun and a good enough shot you could shoot and kill a crocodile.

Although crocodiles are considered bulletproof but they are more slightly bullet resistant than full on bulletproof.

A crocodile can usually survive most gunshots to them but if done correctly then a crocodile can still be shot and killed.

Crocodiles are pretty tough animals.

The lifespan of a crocodile is from 50 to 70 years.

Crocodiles or true crocodiles are large semiaquatic reptiles that live throughout the tropics in Africa, Asia, the Americas and Australia.

Wild crocodiles are advantageous carnivores, capable of eating whatever prey that happens to stumble upon them.

They have even been known to eat humans from time to time as well, but more on that later!

The larger the crocodile, the larger the prey.

Recent studies have found that crocodiles and their relatives are highly intelligent animals capable of sophisticated behavior such as advanced parental care, complex communication and use of tools for hunting.

What's the difference between crocodiles and alligators?

The snout shape and jawline are probably the easiest ways to distinguish alligators vs. crocodiles.

Snout Shape: Alligators have a wide, rounded, u-shaped snout, while crocodiles have long, pointed, v-shaped snouts.

Jawline: Alligators have a wide upper jaw, which allows for the teeth to remain hidden in the mouth.

The crocodile appeared before the alligator in terms of evolutionary history. Crocodiles date back around 80 million years, while alligators emerged about 37 million years ago. Both reptiles belong to the Crocodylia order and share common ancestors, but crocodiles appeared earlier in the fossil record. They are fascinating creatures with distinct characteristics and adaptations for survival in their respective habitats.
