If you the tenant caused any damage to the apartment or rental house then yes the landlord can deduct the amount for the damages from your security deposit.

The landlord however cannot deduct money from your security deposit for normal wear and tear of things in the apartment.

The landlord also needs to give you in writing a list of the damages done to the apartment or rental house when they deduct the amount from your security deposit.

In some cases they may keep the security deposit in full to cover the cost of any damages done to the rental unit but they must give you a list of any damages and document them.
