Depends on the type of squirrel.
For ground squirrels they'll use their paws to dig a burrow or a little cave in the ground to hibernate in during the winter months.
However the red Squirrels which are tree dwelling squirrels including the eastern grey squirrels make little homes called dens in the tree trunks or they'll also use twigs and leaves to make nests on the branches of trees.
