12 months is as long as an open bottle of brake fluid is good for since once the air tight seal is broken the brake fluid in the open bottle will start to attract and collect moisture and then the brake fluid will lose it's boiling point.
If the open bottle of brake fluid is 12 months or older you should get rid of it and get a new bottle or bottles of brake fluid to put into your vehicles brake system.
