The small intestine is retroperitoneal and most of the duodenum is retroperitoneal and also the ascending and descending parts of the colon.

And between these 2 points we also have an intraperitoneal structure, the small intestine which is also attached to the body wall via the mesentery.

If your intestines burst the contents of the intestine and GI tract can spill into the abdomen and cause an infection called peritonitis which is an infection that can lead to sepsis which is a life threatening condition.

A hole in the intestines can heal itself in some cases if the hole in the intestine is small.

Although larger holes in the intestines will require surgery to heal and you will usually need to have antibiotics given through IV.

A hole in the intestines can be caused by trauma or an injury which can puncture a hole in the GI tract.

Also other causes of injury to the intestines that can lead to a hole in your intestines is accidentally swallowing an object or substance such as corrosive chemicals, magnets, sharp objects or batteries.

It usually takes 2 weeks to 4 weeks for your intestines to fully heal after surgery.

However you should begin to feel better within 1 to 2 weeks after the surgery on the intestines.

And your bowel movements may not be regular for several weeks after the surgery and it's normal to have some blood in your poop which should clear up.

When you have part of your small intestine removed you could have some problems with loose stools and not getting enough nutrients from the food you eat.

You may need to have the nutrients given to you directly into your bloodstream through an IV and if you have any long term conditions like Crohn disease, ulcerative colitis or cancer you will usually need ongoing medical treatment.

You can survive without intestines and most people can live without the large intestine although it can be harder to live without the small intestine.

Some people can even live without a stomach.

If all or most of a person's small intestine has to be removed or if it stops working then nutrients must be given directly through the blood stream in liquid form using an intravenous or IV.

Small intestines can sometimes grow back but it's difficult for small intestines to reconstruct and regenerate because of it's complex functions and structure.

Inflamed intestines usually heal within a few weeks to a few months.

However in some cases it may take 4 to 6 months for more severe inflamed intestines to heal.

Inflamed intestines usually take a few months to around 6 months to heal and be reduced although inflamed intestines is a lifelong condition that you will usually deal with.

You can usually feel inflamed intestines which usually causes diarrhea and sometimes bloody diarrhea as well as severe stomach pain and abdominal cramping.
