The most common reason for a lumbar puncture is for testing and diagnosis of various orders and to remove a small amount of the CSF or spinal fluid to test.

The spinal fluid or CSF fluid during a lumbar puncture is tested for white and red blood cells as well as glucose and protein.

The conditions and diseases that can be detected from the CSF or spinal fluid include meningitis, West Nile Virus, fungal infections, spinal infections, tuberculosis, encephalitis and eastern equine encephalitis virus.

The amount of fluid that is taken during a lumbar puncture is between 30 ml to 40 ml.

After the lumbar puncture needle is properly positioned the doctor will then measure the pressure of your CSF fluid and then collect the 30 ml to 40 ml of fluid.

You should go to the ER after a lumbar puncture if you experience any severe pain around the puncture site or if you have any redness or drainage around the puncture site.

Or if you have a fever or headache that does not resolve within 3 days.

A spinal tap is not painful although you may feel some slight discomfort as the needle is inserted.

You'll most often be mildly sedated during the spinal tap so you should not feel any pain although you may experience a headache and some back pain for a few days after the spinal tap.

A spinal tap also known as a lumbar puncture is when a thin needle is inserted between the bones that are in your lower spine.

A brain fluid leak is also known as a CSF leak or spinal fluid leak which occurs when the spinal fluid or CSF fluid leaks out through a defect in the skull or dura and out through the nose or ear.

You can tell if you have fluid on the brain by getting a brain scan or imaging scan of the brain.

Also when you have fluid on the brain there will usually be symptoms of fluid on the brain which include.

Poor coordination.
Nausea or Vomiting.
Unstable balance.
Sluggishness or sleepiness.
Abnormal eye movements.
Abnormal enlargement of your head or a toddlers head.
Blurred or double vision.
Headache.

If you think you or someone has fluid on the brain you should seek medical attention right away.

Some spinal fluid leaks can heal themselves while others that are more severe can require medical treatment and surgery to fix.

CSF leaks can come and go and less severe CSF leaks can usually heal by themselves without any lasting symptoms or problems.

More severe cases of CSF leaks require medical treatment to fix.

Yellow spinal fluid means that there's abnormal bleeding.

Any spinal fluid that is colored orange, pink or yellow is a sign that there could be abnormal bleeding and green spinal fluid indicates either an infection or presence of bilirubin.

You can have a CSF leak without a headache as some people experience other symptoms of the CSF leak but no headache.

Medical conditions such as dehydration and cerebral arteriosclerosis that can lead to inadequate cerebral blood flow, thereby decreasing CSF secretion in the same manner.

CSF leaks can cause coughing and coughing in people with a CSF has been shown to result in large and abrupt cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure fluctuations which arise by communication between the CSF and intrathoracic pressures, through the venous system.

Things and conditions that can cause a CSF leak are brain tumor, spinal tap, epidural, surgery or even an injury.

A CSF leak does show on an MRI as the MRI can accurately detect CSF and spinal fluid leaks and also other associated complications which include meningoceles and encephaloceles.

A CSF leak typically lasts around 6 months although some CSF leaks may be more severe and need medical treatment to fix.

When you have a CSF leak you should sleep with your head raised on pillows and avoid coughing and blowing your nose.

Spinal fluid can leak into your throat when there's a hole in your dura and bone that separates the brain from the sinuses.

This can cause spinal fluid to leak into the sinuses and then into the back of the throat.

A CSF leak can affect your eyes and cause blurred or double vision due to the downward pressure on your brain which causes problems with your ocular nerves which connect to your eyes.

A CSF leak can cause nerve pain when the brain sags downward due to the pressure of the fluid leaking somewhere near the meninges.

The brain sagging downwards when you're upright can stretch your meninges and nerves that line the brain which can cause hte nerve pain.

CSF leaks do most often cause neck pain and sometimes shoulder pain as well.

Ringing in the ears or changes in your hearing are also signs of a CSF or spinal fluid leak.

A CSF leak headache will feel like a normal headache but the headache will become severe when you are upright and then the CSF headache should go away once you're laying flat.

Things and conditions that can mimic a CSF or spinal fluid leak are prior Chiari decompression surgery, vestibular migraine, cervicogenic headache, POTS and orthostatic hypotension.

To know if your spinal fluid is leaking you should have a CT myelography test done.

The CT myelography test uses a CT scan and a contrast dye to locate CSF leaks anywhere in the skull base.

It provides the most precise location of a CSF leak and helps to determine the most appropriate treatment plan.

You should also look out for symptoms of a spinal fluid leak which is most commonly a headache or clear fluid leaking from the ear or nose.

If you lose too much spinal fluid the loss of the spinal fluid can lead to postural headaches as well as brain infections, stroke and meningitis.

A spinal fluid leak is serious and a medical emergency.

You can replace lost spinal fluid as your body continuously makes and produces spinal fluid and the spinal fluid then completely regenerates within 6 to 8 hours.

The fluid between the vertebrae is Spinal Fluid also known as Cerebrospinal fluid or CSF which is a clear watery like fluid which circulates in the space surrounding your spinal cord and brain.

The spinal fluid or CSF fluid protects the brain and spinal cord from injury by acting as a liquid cushion.

CSF or spinal fluid is not sticky but instead CSF or spinal fluid is watery and clear.

Caffeine does increase spinal fluid as long term consumption of caffeine helps to induce ventriculomegaly which is mediated by increased production of spinal fluid or CSF.

The diseases that can be found and detected in spinal fluid are.

EEEV or eastern equine encephalitis virus.
West Nile Virus.
Tuberculosis.
Fungal Infections.
Meningitis.
Encephalitis.

The causes of excess spinal fluid are poor absorption and the partial blockage of the flow of cerebrospinal fluid, either from one ventricle to another or from the ventricles to other spaces around the brain.

The body typically produces enough CSF each day and absorbs the same amount.

However, when the normal flow or absorption of CSF is blocked it can result in a buildup of CSF.

The pressure from too much CSF can keep the brain from functioning properly and cause brain damage and even death.

Cerebrospinal fluid also known as spinal fluid is a clear fluid which surrounds your brain and spinal cord.

Your cerebrospinal fluid is a colorless clear fluid also known as your spinal fluid.

Spinal fluid does regenerate in your body.

Your body is producing spinal fluid continuously and the spinal fluid fully regenerates every 6 to 8 hours.

Spinal fluid is made of plasma and low protein content and few cells.

Spinal fluid is also mainly produced by choroid plexus and also by the ependymal lining cells of the brain's ventricular system.

The spinal fluid is also a clear and colorless fluid.

CSF or spinal fluid is slightly alkaline and is about 99 percent water.

There are about 100 to 150 ml of CSF in the normal adult human body.
