Catalytic converters should not need replaced that often. A catalytic converter is expected to last up to 10 years and in some cases even longer.
If your car is suffering from poor gas mileage or has poor engine performance and the car is 10 years old or older then it's probably a good idea to get the catalytic converter replaced.
