Things that can cause a catalytic converter to fail prematurely are warped or worn engine components, Worn Piston Rings, Failing gaskets, bad valve seals, spark plugs that don't fire correctly causing a misfire can also cause a catalytic converter to fail because of unburned fuel igniting inside the catalytic converter.
