How long does it take for a check to come out of my account?

After writing a check to someone and they cash or deposit the check how long does it take for the money to come out of my checking account?

In my personal experience once someone has cashed a check I've written them the funds don't actually come out of my checking account until 3 days later after the check has been cashed or deposited.

It can be different with different banks though but that is just in my experience.
