Ecchymotic means discoloring of the skin and a bruise that is caused by blood leaking from broken blood vessels into the tissues of the skin or mucous membranes.

Ecchymosis is a skin discoloration that results from bleeding underneath the skin and usually larger than 1 cm or . 4 inches.

A bruise is a discolored skin area that is caused by a blow, impact or suction (suction bruise) that ruptured underlying small blood vessels.

Ecchymosis is caused by the leaking of blood from blood vessels into the subcutaneous tissue that underlies the skin.

The most common cause is trauma (e.g., blunt force to the skin, leading to the rupture of capillaries) and it may affect various regions of the body.

Examples of superficial hematomas and ecchymosis are: Eye, periorbital, eyelid or facial hematoma or ecchymosis.

Vaginal, scrotal or penile hematoma or ecchymosis. Head, arm or leg hematoma or ecchymosis.

In most cases, ecchymosis is not cause for concern.

Symptoms of ecchymosis resolve in time and are often due to minor soft tissue injuries.

Most instances of ecchymosis occur due to soft tissue injuries, such as falls, sprains, and other impact-related injuries.

Bleeding into the skin can occur from broken blood vessels that form tiny red dots (called petechiae).

Blood also can collect under the tissue in larger flat areas (called purpura), or in a very large bruised area (called an ecchymosis).

Ecchymosis turns the skin a dark purple color.

As the bruise heals, it may turn green, yellow, or brown.

The bruise symptoms you're probably familiar with include: Pain over the bruise.

You may begin to bruise easily if you aren't getting enough iron.

That's because your body needs iron to keep your blood cells healthy.

If your blood cells aren't healthy, your body won't be able to get the oxygen that it needs to function.

This may make your skin more susceptible to bruising.
