In most states it's 6 years that a creditor has to collect debt from you.
After the 6 years is up then the creditor cannot sue you or continue to pursue you for the debt or take anymore legal action against you.
In some places it can be up to 7 years that a debt collector has to collect debt you owe and after the 7 years the debt collector is no longer allowed to chase you legally for the debt.
