The age that you stop paying property tax in Nebraska is age 65 and older.
However you don't automatically stop paying property tax in Nebraska once you reach age 65 or older and instead, homeowners in Nebraska that are aged 65 or older can apply for what is called a Homestead Exemption that can reduce or even eliminate property taxes.
Although the qualification for the Homestead Exemption depends strictly on your household income and home value limits.
To qualify for the Homestead Exemption in Nebraska you must turn 65 years old before January 1st of the tax year that you apply.
And you must own and also live in the home from January 1st through August 15th.
And a full 100 percent homestead exemption in Nebraska requires that your household income falls below the specific state thresholds on a sliding scale like below $37,000.00 for single filers and $43,400.00 for married filers, adjust annually.
And higher incomes also will receive only a partial reduction in their property taxes.
You must also file Form 458, with your local Nebraska county assessor each year between February 1st and June 30th.
So while you don't automatically stop paying property tax in Nebraska at age 65, you can eventually have it reduced or even eliminated depending on your income and circumstances.
But you have to file for the homestead exemption as it doesn't happen automatically once you turn age 65.
