The reason you should never manipulate or move a dislocation is because doing so can damage the joint and its surrounding muscles, ligaments, nerves or blood vessels.

If you do have a dislocated joint you can and should put ice on the injured joint.

The ice can help reduce swelling by controlling internal bleeding and the buildup of fluids in and around the injured joint.

Moving the broken bones can increase pain and bleeding and can damage tissues around the injury.

This can lead to complications in the repair and healing of the injury later on.

First aid for fractures is all about immobilizing (limiting movement of) the injured area.

Splints can be used for this.

Forwards (or anterior) dislocations of the shoulder are extremely painful and you won't be able to move the arm.

There may be a deforming bulge in the front of your shoulder area, below the natural shoulder joint.

This will be the ball of the upper arm bone, called the humeral head, that has slipped out.

A dislocation is an injury in which the ends of your bones are forced from their normal positions.

The cause is usually trauma resulting from a fall, an auto accident, or a collision during contact or high-speed sports.

Dislocation usually involves the body's larger joints.

Encourage the person to support the injury with their hand, or use a cushion or items of clothing to prevent unnecessary movement.

Supporting the injury may help relieve pain and prevent further damage.

Support the limb above and below the injury if possible.
