Foods that cannot be dehydrated include Avocados, eggs, milk, butter, fatty meats, store bought condiments and olives.

Vegetables that are great for dehydrating for long term storage include beets, carrots, celery, corn mushrooms, onions, peas and potatoes.

Dried meat is commonly called Jerky or Chipped beef or chipped meat.

Dried meat is also sometimes simply called dehydrated meat.

Dried beef, also called chipped beef, is beef that has been partially dried, salt-cured and thinly sliced.

You can easily enjoy this cured meat as an appetizer, snack or meal.

Dried beef has a rich past but is a relatively obscure meat product in most parts of the country today.

The temperatures of dehydrators and oven dehydrating are not high enough to destroy harmful microorganisms that are typically present in raw meat.

Even though fully dried jerky may appear done, it is not safe to eat unless it goes through an additional heat treatment.

This can be done before or after the meat is dried.

Drying or dehydrating is one of the oldest ways to preserve foods. It makes them last longer and keeps them safe to eat.

Nutrition-wise, food stays mostly the same, although the drying process can destroy vitamins A and C.

And the calorie count can rise as the food shrinks and nutrients become more concentrated.
