The A in clap when it comes to first aid stands for Anticipation.

CLAP stands for Communication, Line of Sight, Anticipation, and Position of Maximum Usefulness.

C – Control the situation. L – Look for hazards. A – Assess the situation. P – Protect and Prioritize.

The first aid acronym CLAP is a way to think about initial accident scene management.

Control the situation -Stop take a breath and take charge of people and traffic

Look for hazards – Look for anything that might cause harm to children or bystanders in the immediate area. Don’t forget yourself!

Assess the situation – Gather as much information as possible about what has occurred from bystanders and try to make a diagnosis (history, signs and symptoms)

Protect and prioritize – Ensure protection is worn (gloves) and the casualties are prioritized using a Triage system.

Try to gain assistance from a bystander and contact the emergency services.

First aid is as easy as ABC – airway, breathing and CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation).

In any situation, apply the DRSABCD Action Plan. DRSABCD stands for: Danger – always check the danger to you, any bystanders and then the injured or ill person.

DRABC stands for Danger, Response, Airway, Breathing and Circulation.

The 5 key steps to first aid include.

Recognize the emergency. Does someone look like they're in trouble?
Call 911 if you think you should.
Ask them questions in case the situation escalates to unconsciousness.
Be kind and calm.
Be a Steward of the person.
