Why do frozen water pipes always burst open?
Last winter I had frozen water pipes and the frozen pipes burst.
What causes the pipes to burst?

When the pipes have ice in them the ice starts to expand under pressure and that's usually what causes the pipe to burst.
When a pipe is frozen you should open the faucet to relieve the pressure when the pipe starts to thaw.
