How much sleep does a person need at a minimum?

To be healthy and alert during the day how much sleep does a person need to get?

An adult needs a minimum of 8 hours of sleep to be healthy and fully alert the next day.

You can function on less than 8 hours of sleep but 8 hours is what we really need as adults to function and stay healthy.
