To keep my wood stove going all night I will put as many logs or pieces of firewood in the wood stove as I can and then leave the door open for just a few minutes until the logs catch fire and then cut back the air supply coming into the stove and close the damper on the wood stove half way.

I leave the damper open just enough to let some air to the wood stove. This will allow the wood to get just enough air to let the logs slow burn without going out.

You don't want or need a roaring fire overnight just enough to keep the house at 55 F is usually good enough overnight.

Sometimes by doing this I have at least one log that still hasn't burned all the way and I can get the fire going again by stoking the coals and throwing some more kindling and other wood on it to get the house back up to temperature.
