If you can smell your brakes it could be caused by sticking brake calipers, emergency brake not released or your new brake pads are wearing down some and breaking in.

When your brakes smell like they are burning it's usually because the brake pads or brake shoes are rubbing against the brake drums or brake rotors.

It could be that your brake caliper is stuck on one side and not releasing fully and causing the brake pads to stick and rub against the brake rotors which causes the brakes to smell like they are burning.

Your brakes heat up naturally and normally because the brakes use friction to stop the vehicle.

However your brake rotors and brake drums should not get really hot and if they do then your brakes are sticking and not releasing.

Also if you've just had your brakes worked on and had new brake pads or brake shoes fitted it can be normal to have a temporary burning smell as your brake pads wear down a bit and get broken in.

If the brakes continue to smell like they are burning after 100 miles or more then something is wrong and you should have the brakes checked out.

If you've recently had your brakes serviced or replaced, the new parts may be to blame for the weird brake smell and that's okay.

The brake burning smell most often indicates that the resin in your new brake pads is curing, which means the material is getting stronger with use.
