The cold weather can affect your engine especially when you first start the engine after it's been cold.

When the weather is cold the engine oil is also cold as well as the engine coolant.

The engine will also use a bit more fuel when it's first started in the cold until the engine reaches operating temperature.

The engine has a coolant temperature sensor that senses the coolant temperature and tells the engines computer how much fuel to send to the engine.

When the engine is cold the computer will send more fuel to the engine until it gets warmed up.

Some engines will also rev high for a few minutes in the cold and then after it warms up it idles back down.

Also when the engine is cold the engine oil is also cold and when engine oil is cold it's hard for the oil to flow through the engine properly.

So it's good to let the engine warm up before taking off so that the oil can lubricate the bearings properly.

It all depends on the engine itself.  For example, caterpillar engines are engineered to the highest quality criteria with unmatched reliability and durability.  They work under the harshest conditions.  In extreme cold, do not leave the engine idling for a long time; when operating at low speeds, the engine does not warm up to the desired temperature, which leads to the appearance of carbon deposits on its pistons and valves.
