Why does it get dark earlier in the winter?

In the winter months why does it start to get dark earlier than in summer?

When the earth is orbiting in the summer months the northern hemisphere the top of the earth is tilted towards the sun which gives us longer days.

In the winter months the earths top or northern hemisphere is tilted away from the sun which causes shorter days.
