Is eating Sand safe for A Toddler?

A friend was over this morning and had her 3 year old son with her.

When we weren't looking he went over to the sidewalk where some sand was and started eating it.

His mother did nothing to stop him and I tried to get him to stop but he wouldn't stop.

Is there anything harmful about eating sand and dirt?

It's perfectly safe. I used to eat sand and dirt when I was little and I'm still here and healthy.

It's perfectly okay to eat sand. I used to do the same when I was toddler up until 6 years old.

I remember one time though I got a rock stuck in my mouth when I was 3 years old and mom had to get it out.

That was 25 years ago and I'm still alive today without health problems.
