Melatonin is considered to be safe to take every night for at least 2 months at a time.

If the Melatonin is not working to help you sleep within a week of taking it then you should stop taking it and try some other sleep medicines.

Also speak with your doctor as they may have to prescribe some prescription strength sleeping medicines.

When you take a sleeping pill the sleeping pill should begin making you sleepy within 30 minutes to an hour depending on the strength of the sleeping pill.

Then when you get to sleep you should aim to sleep at least 10 to 12 hours after taking the sleeping pill and be aware that sometimes you may still feel a bit drowsy in the morning or throughout the day when taking sleeping pills.

So try to get enough sleep and get as much sleep as possible and if you can sleep in later do so to catch up on the missed sleep.

Taking sleeping pills everyday or every night for sleep is not considered a good thing for your health.

But when you can't sleep and are sleep deprived the sleep deprivation or insomnia is also not good for your health and we all need sleep to function the next day.

Only take sleeping pills if you cannot get to sleep and have no other option.

Take the sleeping pills for a few days and then try to get to sleep the next day without them and if you still cannot sleep then you may need to take the sleeping pills everyday or every night for sleep.

Going even one night without sleep is not healthy and the next day you'll be feeling the effects of it and will be really tired, not alert and your head will likely hurt and you won't be able think clearly.

The longer you go without any sleep the worse your health gets and you lose alertness even more.

After 48 hours of being awake and not sleeping at all your cognitive performance will worsen, and then you will become very fatigued and after that happens your brain will start entering brief periods of complete unconsciousness, also known as microsleep.

Then if you continue to stay awake and not try to sleep after a week or two your organs such as heart, liver, brain etc can start failing and eventually death will set in where you'll go to sleep permanently and be dead.

Insomnia is rarely fatal but if you do stay up too long and go for weeks without sleep then eventually you could die and go to sleep permanently.

The insomnia if left untreated can lead to health issues such as heart disease, heart attacks etc.

When you're sleep deprived you also can get into car accidents or walk out into traffic etc or have accidents at home that could be deadly.

Because you're not thinking clearly when you're deprived of sleep.

If you suffer from insomnia and cannot get to sleep after a few nights you should speak with your doctor and get some sleeping pills.

Sometimes over the counter sleep medicines can work but sometimes people need stronger sleep medicines that a doctor can prescribe.
