Is it better to keep domain registration separate from the web hosting account?

I'm looking at web hosting to start a website and the web host company says I can get a free domain through them if I sign up for a year of hosting with them?

Should I register my domain name through my web hosting account or keep it separate through a different domain registrar?

I always recommend you keep your web hosting and domain name registration separate from each other.

There's been times when someone has wanted to move away from their web host and the web hosting company wouldn't let go of the domain and let the domain owner transfer it away.

It's best to just keep your domain registration separate and prevent all the headaches.

I recommend using dynadot for domain registration and hawk host for web hosting.
