For a child to fly internationally a birth certificate can be used but only as a secondary identification for the child.

The child will also need a Passport to fly internationally along with the birth certificate or other identification.

If the child doesn't have a Passport along with the birth certificate then the child will not be allowed to fly internationally.

So make sure you have a valid Passport and the Birth Certificate along with any other identification for you and the child to fly when flying internationally.

It's better to have too much documentation than not enough documentation when flying internationally.

Yes, you will certainly require a birth certificate for your child to fly internationally. Airlines and immigration authorities often seek the proof of age and identity for all passengers, including all minors. A birth certificate serves as a vital document that proves how old you or your ward are together with your identity when traveling abroad. You should know the application procedure to get it from India if you are an Indian or NRI.

To obtain a birth certificate for your child from India, follow these general steps:

  • Registration: Ensure that your child's birth is registered with the local authorities in India within the prescribed time frame (21 days from birth). The hospital or local municipality office usually handles birth registrations.
  • Application: Visit the municipal corporation or the local Registrar of Births and Deaths office in the city/town where the birth occurred. NRIs can obtain the form from the embassy. So, all you need to do is to obtain the birth certificate application form, fill it out with accurate details, and submit it along with the required documents.
  • Required Documents: The common requisite documents include the application form, proof of birth such as hospital or nursing home birth certificate, parents' identification documents, and marriage certificate (if applicable).
  • Verification: The authorities will verify the provided information, and upon successful verification, the birth certificate will be issued. The processing time may vary depending on the location and efficiency of the issuing authority.

Ensure that you plan ahead and obtain the birth certificate well before your planned international travel to avoid any last-minute complications.

Yes, generally, you do need a birth certificate for a baby to travel on a plane. However, the specific requirements can vary, depending on the airline, the destination, and the age of the child. A birth certificate is often requested as a proof of the child's age and identity. Let’s get into details.

  • Age Verification: Airlines have specific rules regarding the age at which a child can travel for free or at a reduced fare (which is low for minors). A birth certificate is typically required to verify the child's age and eligibility for these discounts.
  • Security and Identity: For security reasons, and to prevent child trafficking, airlines may ask for proof of the child's identity. A birth certificate is a universally accepted document for this purpose.
  • International Travel: If you are traveling internationally, a birth certificate in India may be required for visa applications. Some countries may also require additional documentation, such as a consent letter from both parents if only one is traveling with the child.

It's crucial to check the specific requirements of the airline you plan to travel with and the immigration regulations of your destination country. In some cases, a passport for the child may be necessary instead of, or in addition to, a birth certificate. Always verify the documentation requirements well in advance of your travel date to ensure a smooth journey for you and your baby.
