Abdominal hysterectomies are considered to be major surgery with a big incision on the belly.

After you have an abdominal hysterectomy it can take a full 6 weeks to fully recover from the surgery.

You should only need to be on bed rest for a few days to a week after having the hysterectomy and should take it easy for at least 6 weeks and avoid doing any heavy lifting while you heal up fully from the surgery.

Although you don't have to stay in bed the full six weeks you should rest often until the 6 weeks have passed.

If you have a vaginal hysterectomy you usually recover faster since vaginal hysterectomies are done entirely through the vagina and no incision is needed.

After a hysterectomy you'll need to be on bed rest for a few days although you'll need to rest often for a few months afterwards to heal properly.
