If your house is 100 years old and never has been rewired then I recommend updating the wiring in your home.

If it's a newer home or a home is only 40 years old then chances are the wiring is still safe and can last another 40 or so years.

The copper itself will last thousands of years probably longer than the house. But the insulation is what breaks down and degrades overtime potentially exposing the copper wire and causing it to short out against each other.

If your wiring is 20 years old it doesn't hurt to get an inspection on the electrical system just to be safe but you're unlikely to need to rewire the house for another 80 years.
