I've heard too that they're unsafe and have seen some catch fire on homes. But I've had my smart electric meter in for almost 3 years now without any problem.
Even a regular electric meter can catch fire. The smart meters that are catching fire may have just been defective.
There's no way you can stop the electric meter installation unless you want to have your electric completely cut off.
