The clouds that are associated with warm and cold fronts are stratus clouds which form in warm fronts and cumulous clouds which form in cold fronts.

Warm fronts can have broad areas of stratiform clouds with widespread areas of drizzle and light rain ahead of them.

Stratiform clouds do mean stable air as they are formed in relatively stable conditions in which lifted air will be restricted and instead be spread out horizontally.

The 2 types of stratus clouds are stratus fractus clouds which are a cloud with a stratus layer that is starting to break up or dissipate and leads to breaks in the cloud and stratus nebulosus clouds which have a featureless, dark layer that is capable of producing drizzle.

The icing that is normally found inside stratiform clouds is rime ice which is an opaque or milky white deposit of ice which also forms when an airplane is flying through stratiform or filmy clouds.

The 3 examples of stratus clouds are nimbostratus clouds which are a typical rain cloud, Altostratus clouds which are thin mid level clouds which appear grayish blue in color and are arranged in sheets across the sky and Cirrostratus which are clouds that are transparent or white and cover the entire sky in a thin sheet.

Stratiform clouds form during a warm front passage due to steady, continuous rain falling from a nimbostratus cloud which adds substantial amounts of humidity to the air.

Although the cloud may form ahead of the front in the cold air masses or behind the warm front in the warm air mass.

The kind of air motions that occur in stratiform clouds are vertical air motions which are only derived where liquid water is present and is relatively vertically coherent with a mean upward motion.

Stratiform clouds or stratus clouds are associated with vertical air motions, synoptic air motions and mesoscale air motions which arise from large scale horizontal convergence and frontal or orographic lifting of moist air masses.

The difference between convective and stratiform clouds are convective clouds tend to be deeper than stratiform clouds and gives the appearance of boiling liquid and stratiform clouds are shallow, layered and more quiescent.

Both types of clouds may occur in the same atmospheric systems.

If the warm air that is overriding the front is stable then stratiform clouds develop and if the warm air is unstable, cumuliform clouds develop and any precipitation from stratiform clouds is most often stead with little to no turbulence.

The height of stratiform clouds depends on the group of stratiform clouds as there are 3 groups of stratiform clouds which include the high level stratiform clouds which are above 20,000 feet high, middle level stratiform clouds which are 6,500 ft to 20,000 ft and low level stratiform clouds which are below 6,500 ft.

A stratiform rain is rain that is relatively continuous and uniform in intensity.

Stratiform rings and bands occur between active connective bands of a hurricane outside of the eye wall.

Stratocumulus clouds indicate a change in the weather and are most often present near a occluded front, cold front or warm front and usually form from a layer of stratus cloud breaking up.

Stratocumulus clouds don't always produce any precipitation or rain and when they do it is generally only light rain or light snow

However stratocumulus clouds often are seen at either the front or tail end of worse weather so they may indicate that storms are to come, in the form of thunderheads and or gusty winds.
