Electricity is so expensive now due to rising demand for electricity and because the fuel prices for the fuel that is used to produce electricity has also gone up.

The cost of fuel such as natural gas, coal, oil etc have increased which is then passed down to the user of the electricity.

As you use more electricity the power plants use more fuel to create that electricity which also drives the cost of your electric bill up.

Increasing costs of materials and the fuel to move the coal around is another driving factor in the cost of your electricity.

Most people cannot switch electric companies unless they move somewhere else.

For example I used to live in Kansas and my electric bill was too high and even the customer charge alone with $28.00 per month but I then moved to Arkansas and now my customer charge is $11.00 per month and my bills and rates are cheaper.

You can also use less electricity when you can to lower your electric bill but other than moving you cannot get cheaper electricity.

Solar panels can provide some electricity but they cost money and don't always work.
