Long Island is not the smallest island in the United States and actually Long Island is the largest and most populous island in the United States or on the United States Mainland.

Long Island stretches as far as 118 miles long east to west and is 23 miles long at it's widest point north to south and is also bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the south, Long Island Sound to the north and the East River to the west.

The reason Long Island Sound was called the Devil's Belt is because of the sudden storms and nor'easters and the strong belief in the Devil by residents in the nearby communities.

Long Island Sound is different from the Atlantic Ocean in that Long Island Sound is considered an estuary because it is a place where the Atlantic Ocean mixes with fresh water from rivers.
