Long Island Sound is so dirty as a result of the low dissolved oxygen conditions because of nutrient pollution from septic systems, sewage treatment plants, atmospheric deposition, fertilizer and animal waste.

Long Island Sound is not considered an Ocean but instead Long Island Sound is an estuary which is where saltwater from the ocean mixes in with fresh water from rivers which drains from the land.
