The difference between tolerance and tachyphylaxis is tachyphylaxis is the attenuation that occurs in response to cellular depletion, whereas tolerance is the attenuation that arises from cellular adaptations.

Tachyphylaxis is what occurs when a medication suddenly provides a lessened response or benefit than it once did.

Examples of medications that can cause tachyphylaxis include depression medications and eye drops that relieve redness or irritation.

Tolerance is a decrease in response to a drug that is used repeatedly.

Resistance is development of the ability to withstand the previously destructive effect of a drug by microorganisms or tumor cells.

Examples of drugs that result in tolerance include alcohol and opioids.

Tachyphylaxis seems to represent saturation of receptor sites.

Tachyphylaxis can be reversed by plasma fractions rich in angiotensinase A, possibly by metabolizing the N-terminal part of angiotensin directly from the bound state.

Dowex 50 can also reverse it, probably by physical adsorption and stronger binding of angiotensin.

Tolerance typically is divided into three functional categories (acute, rapid, and chronic), but determining precisely which molecular underpinning underlies which class of tolerance (or if they are exclusive) can be difficult.

While the effects of tolerance can often be reversed, this is largely contingent on seeking swift and effective treatment.

Withdrawal symptoms can sometimes be fatal, especially if alcohol or benzodiazepine dependencies are involved.

A number of factors influence your chances of having an adverse reaction to a medication.

These include body size, genetics, body chemistry or the presence of an underlying disease.

Also, having an allergy to one drug predisposes one to have an allergy to another unrelated drug.
