During an ice storm you should always keep up to date on the weather conditions and get things prepared for a power outage.

Find your flashlights, charge your cellphones fully and if you can get a portable generator and some gasoline so that you can have some electricity should the electricity go out due to the ice storm.

If you don't have to venture outside during the ice storm then it's best to stay put in your house or at least in your yard and don't drive anywhere during an ice storm unless absolutely needed.

Driving on ice is very dangerous and it's not worth risking driving on the ice unless you have no other choice to do so.

Also make sure you have some other form of heat source to keep you and your house warm during an ice storm should the power go out.

Furnaces require electricity to start and run the blower motor so without electricity your natural gas furnace will not work.

You need a backup source such as a gas wall heater or floor furnace that requires no electricity to operate.

Other backup sources of heat are wood stoves, kerosene heater, pellet stoves etc.

Pellet Stoves do require some electricity to use though so you'll need a generator to operate the auger system on the pellet stove but a small generator can power it.

Also never use a generator inside the house otherwise you can and will die from Carbon Monoxide poisoning.

Always use a generator outside.

You should also stuff towels and rags by doors to keep the heat in the rooms you're staying in.

If you can only heat part of your house consider heating your living room only and move everyone into the living room to stay warm.
