Adding too much transmission fluid can damage your transmission since it will foam up and cause gear shifting that is erratic and cause the transmission to starve for transmission fluid and then your transmission could go out due to loss of transmission fluid getting through your transmission.
When adding transmission fluid pour a little at a time and constantly check it before adding more to make sure you don't overfill the transmission.
