You can use baby sunscreen on your dog as long as the baby sunscreen is free of fragrance and free of Zinc.

Dogs stay cool on the beach by playing in the water, staying under umbrellas and in the shade and drinking plenty of cold water that is kept in the shade.

Dogs like to sit in the sun as the heat from the sun makes the dog feel cozy and warm and it feels good to their belly and back.

Sunbathing helps the dog keep their basal temperature high enough and saves the dog energy.

You should let your dog lay in the sun for no more than 30 minutes at a time as they can get sunburn if left out in the sun too long.

When it's hot outside it's okay for the dog to be outside for 30 minutes as long as they have plenty of water and shade but even then the dog should be brought in when it's too hot out as they can suffer a heat stroke just like humans can.

Using baby sunscreen on your dog may not be the best option, as many human sunscreens contain ingredients that can be harmful to pets. Dogs have different skin types and sensitivities compared to humans, and their safety requirements differ. Here's what you should consider:

Why You Shouldn't Use Human Sunscreen on Dogs:

  1. Ingestion Risk: Dogs may lick their skin, and human sunscreens often contain chemicals that can be toxic when ingested.

  2. Zinc Oxide and PABA: Many human sunscreens contain zinc oxide, which can be harmful to dogs if ingested in large quantities. Additionally, some sunscreens contain para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), which is toxic to dogs.

  3. Fragrances and Additives: Human sunscreens often include fragrances and other additives that can irritate a dog's skin or be allergenic.

  4. Lower SPF: Dogs have thinner fur in some areas and may require a higher Sun Protection Factor (SPF) than what's typically found in human sunscreens.

What to Use Instead: If you want to protect your dog from the sun, it's better to use a pet-specific sunscreen formulated for dogs. Pet sunscreens are designed to be safe for dogs and are free from harmful ingredients. Look for products that meet the following criteria:

  1. Pet-Friendly Ingredients: Ensure the sunscreen is made with pet-safe ingredients and free from zinc oxide, PABA, and fragrances.

  2. High SPF: Choose a sunscreen with a higher SPF, especially if your dog has a light or thin coat.

  3. Water-Resistant: Opt for a water-resistant formula, as dogs may swim or sweat, which can reduce the sunscreen's effectiveness.

  4. Application: Follow the product's instructions for proper application, and be mindful of sensitive areas like the nose, ears, and belly.

Additionally, you can protect your dog from the sun by providing shade, limiting their exposure during peak sunlight hours, and using doggy clothing, such as UV-blocking shirts or hats.

It's worth discussing these things with your vet. I think there are various sun protection products for animals including and it is possible that they are different from cosmetics for humans. What about a beach umbrella? While this is a pretty simple method, sometimes the simpler the better. You can buy a large, quality umbrella that will protect both you and your dog from direct sunlight on the beach.
